Dog
Training Guide
Hello,
I would like to welcome
you to my website about dog training. I hope that the
information provided here will help you enjoy
your pet even more, once he is properly trained and well
behaved. I have gathered together for my
site, what I have found to be the best dog training
and dog problem solving guides available. I have
also included a review on several of them.
Enjoy.
So
you have your perfect dog. You love him, and he’s so
adorable. Even as he’s chewing on your socks, you find
yourself laughing a little. Unfortunately, if your only
reaction is to laugh at your dog’s misbehavior, he is only
going to continue to misbehave. All puppies are going to
cause some mischief, but the key to a well-behaved dog is
making sure that the behaviors of the puppy do not
continue into adulthood. There are a few keys to ensuring
that this doesn’t happen.

One of the first steps to
raising a well-behaved dog is establishing rules. Like
children, dogs need boundaries or they can be pretty
destructive. These rules are going to be different for
different people, but the earlier the rules are established the
better. It’s going to be harder to convince your 70-pound
golden retriever not to jump on your bed than it is to teach
the dog when he was only a 10-pound puppy. Once you allow the
behavior, though, the dog starts to feel that the behavior is
accepted. This is why it is important that everyone in the
family understands that your dog needs to have rules, and it is
important that everyone enforces the rules.
Consistency is extremely
important in dog training. A firm “no” when your dog is chewing
on your shoes should do it. Make sure that you are consistent
in all your puppy’s behaviors including housebreaking. Although
consistency takes time and patience, your time and patience
will pay off in the end when you have a well-behaved dog.
Eventually your dog will learn what behaviors are good and
which ones are bad.
It is also important that you
start early when you are attempting to train a dog. Although
older dogs can be trained, they start to establish certain
habits. Once those habits are established, it’s harder to
correct the behavior. In the same sense, when possible, prevent
instead of correct your dog’s negative behaviors. For example,
if you put out a tray of food on the table, and you see your
dog eying it, instead of getting upset with the dog after he
has grabbed some of the food, tell the dog “no” when you see
him looking at the food.

One word commands are also
helpful when you are working to train your dog. Instead of
“sit, sit, sit, SIT,” try just saying it once. Repeated
commands give the impression that the command does not need to
be obeyed the first time. Saying it once helps the dog to see
that when this command is given, it should be obeyed right
away.
To help your dog realize good
behaviors, it is important that he is rewarded for doing good
things. In the beginning, you can provide food rewards for
desired behaviors. Later, though, these rewards can be in the
form of praise and positive attention. Your dog will learn that
it is beneficial to listen to and obey you. With patience and
consistency, you will find that you will have a dog that is a pleasure
to be around.
