I considered myself a fair dog trainer before trying Clickertraining - The 4 Secrets of Becoming a Supertrainer by Morten Egtvedt and Cecilie Koeste, the married training team from Norway. I did some research on the couple first, and was impressed. Morten is a Biologist and trained animals while in the Norwegian Army and Ceci has decades of training experience with show dogs and horses.

I had always been interested in learning more about clicker training after seeing how animals were clicker-trained on the sets of the Harry Potter movie franchise.

So I decided to give it a go, after all, the courseware comes with non-restrictive access to the materials, and has a 56-day 100% money-back no-risk whatsoever guarantee that was even “waterproof”.

The courseware includes the main book titled Clickertraining - The 4 Secrets of Becoming a Supertrainer plus 5 “bonus” videos of considerable length. The bonus videos teach you to train your dog to:

1) Retrieve
2) Get the mail from the box
3) Heel (for a puppy)
4) Take a soda from the refrigerator
5) Wrap itself up in a blanket.

The basic instructional manual had relevant sections on:

• What clicker training is and isn’t
• Positive vs. negative reinforcement
• How to find effective reinforcers
• Stylistic differences in the way to hold clicker trainings
• How to clicker train dogs that have been trained using other cues
• How to use reliable tested cues in real life
• How to condition the clicker and how to use alternative reward markers
• How to do target training using a clicker, how to do back chaining trainings
• And the 5 dangerous pitfalls that 99% of trainers fall into.

In addition to the well-organized and written book (well over 200 pages), there are detailed training plans for over 30 behavior trainings (as well as a blank form to begin completing your own). As any experienced trainer will tell you, having a training plan in hand pays off in the end.

From a practical point of view, I found the book to be useful, and I would take my netbook (loaded with the PDF file) out in the garden to do the work. None of my dogs had ever heard a clicker before, and were quite puzzled over what I wanted them to do. The advice found in the book was very helpful (see the “How to clicker train dogs that have been trained using other cues” section). After just a few hours we all got the message and things started to “click.” I also relearned what I though I knew about backchaining. That was a very helpful section for me.

So all in all I feel I am a better trainer now after working with the materials and highly recommend this package. The only thing about this product that I am not so sure about is the part about teaching your dog to retrieve things from the refrigerator. After all, teaching your dog how to gain full access to your refrigerator with all your food in it probably isn't a very good idea.
