Dog Clicker Training
There are many ways to train your dogs. A
method that works well, though, is dog clicker training. The
key to dog clicker training is helping
your dog to associate good behavior with a
positive result. 
To start dog clicker training,
you will need treats as well as a clicker. Clickers can be
purchased at many pet stores, but you can even use a child’s
toy that will make a clicking sound if you are unable to get a
clicker. You start by clicking when the dog is performing the
desired task, and then the click is followed-up by a treat. For
example, as you see your dog sitting down, use the clicker to
make a sound. Then give your dog a treat. Your dog will come to
associate that behavior with the clicking sound which will then
lead to the dog associating the behavior and the sound with a
treat. If done properly, dog clicker training should not
require you to ever physically force
behavior.

Once your dog has started to
associate the actions with the sound and the treat, you can add
in verbal commands or physical gestures that show your dog that
you want him to perform a certain action. For example, as your
dog is sitting down, you can tell him “sit.” Before long, your
dog should come to understand what this word means. This will
get your dog excited about doing what you want him to do. Once
the dog has learned the verbal or physical commands for the
behavior, you can get rid of the clicker altogether. It has
served its purpose.

It is important to know that even with dog clicker training
your dog will not perform the desired actions at all times
perfectly in the beginning. Encouraging the behavior can help
your dog to see what you need. For example, luring your dog
over with a treat and then moving the treat down and just out
of reach should encourage the dog to sit in an attempt to get
to the treat. As your dog sits, it is important that you use
the clicker and reward him right away for his behavior. If your
dog is unwilling to do what you want, don’t give him the treat.
This is important. If you just give him treats without him
doing something, the wanted behavior or behaviors will not be
learned.

One important thing to know about
using a treat as a lure is that if you want your dog to perform
the behavior without the lure, you will need to sometimes
encourage the behavior without the treat. Eventually you can
even completely phase out the treat (along with the clicker),
and you will still have the wanted behavior. It is important
that you help your dog to see that it is it’s obedience to your
commands that results in the reward. Otherwise, you will only
have a dog that responds to treats. As you do dog clicker
training with your dog, make sure that you are patient but also
consistent. The right behaviors will come, but they will not
come without patient and consistent training.
