Golden Retriever Training
If you own a
golden retriever, you probably know that they are great pets.
Because they are friendly and playful, they are good with
children of all ages and continue to be among the most popular
family pets. They also want to please their owners. This makes
training your dog worth the effort. Golden retriever training,
though, can be a frustrating and time consuming process for
both dog and trainer if you don’t know the proper process to
pursue. The following tips will help you with your golden
retriever training.

Training
One of the
first places to start with training your golden retriever puppy
is teaching the dog the right place to use the bathroom. This
is best achieved by using a crate where your puppy will sleep.
Since the dog does not want to sleep the same place where he
goes to the bathroom, your dog will learn to hold the urges
until he is allowed out of the crate. Just keep your puppy in
the crate for short periods of time, and then let him out to
allow him to relieve himself. Praise your dog when he uses the
bathroom outside of the crate. Praising your dog will reinforce
your golden retriever potty training. As an alternative to the
crate, you can also try an exercise pen where you provide a
newspaper upon which your dog can do his
business.
Another area
of golden retriever training is teaching your dog not to bite
and chew on things. Golden retriever puppies are going to use
their mouths as part of their exploration of the world around
them, but they need to learn what is and what is not
appropriate. Puppies nip at each other when they are playing.
It is important, though, that your golden retriever understand
that it is not appropriate for him to nip at you or anyone else
when playing.
A firm “no” or “enough”
should help to eliminate this habit. Because puppies also enjoy
chewing on the nearest object, it is also important that they
are told “no” when they are chewing on something they shouldn’t
be chewing. Take the object away from the puppy, and replace it
with a toy that he can chew. Until your puppy learns not to
chew on things, it is important that he is not left unattended
outside of his crate or exercise pen.

Even from a
fairly young age part of your golden retriever training can
consist of teaching your dog to obey commands. This will help
to establish that you are pack leader and help so that when
your dog is full-grown, he will obey you and not attempt to
fight your commands. You can train your dog on your own, but
unless you have had formal obedience instruction, taking your
puppy to “puppy classes” is a better option. You can learn
along with your dog the proper way to train him. Your golden
retriever will be happiest when you are happy, so he will learn
that by obeying commands, he is making you happy. Make sure you
use a facility that rewards your dog’s good behavior. With time
and patience, you should have a well-behaved, happy golden
retriever once you have completed your golden retriever
training.
