To avoid dog aggression, puppies should play with older dogs that have been taught how to behave properly and which can set a good example for the puppy or puppies. By allowing the puppy to interact with other dogs from a young age, even as a puppy your dog learns that he does not have to defend his owner from other dogs and that he does not have to fight for his territory. He also learns the right way to interact with other animals.

If you find that your dog is starting to get aggressive, it is time to address the problem right away. Do not allow this behavior to continue, or it will just get worse. A muzzle or head collar is a temporary aid while you are working to stop dog aggression, but it is not going to provide the ultimate solution. Instead, the dog should be trained to focus upon what the owner is saying instead of focusing upon the other dog. A dog who is taught to obey your commands is more likely to listen to you if you say ’sit’ or ’stop’ when the dog is running towards another animal. If you feel nervous, your dog is going to sense this and try to protect you, so it is important that you learn to control your emotions when you are around other animals. You may also want to attempt to distract your dog from another animal or a person with a treat.

If you catch your dog in the act of being aggressive, timeout is one option to try and stop the aggression. Put the dog in a room by himself for five minutes. Make sure that you put the dog in timeout right after he has gotten aggressive and that you only keep him in timeout for about five minutes. This helps the dog to associate the act with the consequence. This should help your dog to understand that aggressive behavior is not an appropriate behavior.

You can also help to prevent your dog from getting aggressive by avoiding games that encourage aggressive behavior. Teach your children and other children that it is not alright to push and shove your dog around even in a playful manner. Doing this even playfully encourages your dog to try and be dominant which can then lead to aggressive behavior.

If none of these solutions work, you can contact a local dog trainer or your veterinarian for advice on how to stop dog aggression. Different dogs respond better to different methods. The key, though, like many things, is to make sure that you are consistent when it comes to how you deal with your dog’s aggression.
