Once your pup or full grown dog understands a few basic commands, it’s easy to get him or her to do just about anything that you want the dog to do. The Stay command is taught with your dog in the standing position at first, but is then later applied to whatever position the dog is in. To teach your dog to Stay, be prepared to be firm and to physically restrain your dog. However, your attitude needs to be cheerful to begin. Have a pocketful of kibbles or your dog’s favorite treats that you can dole out as a reward. Now steady your dog in the standing position on your left side and issue the command Stay, and then immediately begin walking a few steps away while turning towards your dog. If he begins to move with you, gently force him to stay in the standing position at the same spot.

Praise your dog with the same words, like “Good Dog” or “Good Girl” when your dog stays in place, and a firm “No” when the dog does not. Use this phrase consistently for all of your dog’s training. An exaggerated sense of pleasure on your part is also helpful. Use these two phrases exclusively and use the same tone and inflection of voice each time. No use saying “Bad Dog,” a simple “No!” will do.

One the dog has Stay mastered; it’s easy to teach the “Come” command. With the dog standing in the Stay position – and you now a ½ dozen feet away – you can issue the Come command. After the dog comes to you, and most will by instinct, reward him with a “Good Dog,” scratch behind the ear, and then position him again to your left side and give him the “Stay” command.

When your dog completes this sequence you can give him a kibble bit or treat and more scratches behind the ear or pats on the head.

Now, from the standing by your side position, you want to make sure your dog can “Sit” on command. The same method is used as with Stay, but you don’t move – and neither does your dog! Issue the command Sit, and to show your dog what that means, immediately after the command push his rump to the floor and make him sit. Each time, end the command by saying “Good Dog” and giving him some quick love.
Once he does it on his own, give him a “Good Dog,” some loving, and a kibble treat. Do this over and over until he gets it down. It should not take more then a day or two, or even less.

But when teaching your dog basic commands or new tricks, it’s important to realize that a dog’s attention span is shorter then your child’s. Don’t train for more then 15-20 minutes a day to start, or when your dog appears sleepy or not feeling well.

Learning how to teach dog tricks like “Fetch” the toy and bring it back are nothing more then a recombination and slight variation from Sit, Stay, and Come. For example, place a favorite toy some yards away from you and your dog. Make your dog first sit, and then issue the command Fetch. Urge him towards his toy, which he will naturally do. When he grabs the toy, issue the new command “Come” for him to return to you with the toy. Some “Good Dogs” and a little loving after that will reinforce the Fetch and Come commands.
