Jack Russell Training

Click Here For Jack Russell Training!Jack Russell terriers may appear to just be cute, little dogs with scruffy faces and bright eyes, but without the proper training, Jack Russells can turn into quite a handful. If you decide that the Jack Russell is the right dog for your family, be prepared for some intense training to ensure that your dog understands that you are the head of the household. Jack Russell training should start as soon as the dog becomes a part of your household and will continue until he has learned to treat you and others with respect. Only through training can you get a Jack Russell that is a joy to your household.

Because Jack Russells often want to establish their dominance over you, it is important that instead you establish your dominance over him. Don’t allow him to take charge. This can be done by walking through doors before him, feeding yourself before you feed your Jack Russell, and being firm when you discipline him. This, like all Jack Russell training, should start while your dog is still a puppy so that once he is an adult, he will respect you and view you as the Alpha dog. Be careful, though, of getting too physical with your Jack Russell, because they can lash out in anger.

One of the first rules of training a Jack Russell is to be consistent. Your Jack Russell is an intelligent animal, but this intelligence can get in the way of training your Jack Russell. Even after it appears that they have learned the rules, your Jack Russell may rebel against your authority. Be firm when scolding your Jack Russell, but also make sure to praise your dog when he obeys you. With patience, your Jack Russell will learn that it’s important to obey the rules of the house. Make sure however, that you are consistent with the rules you establish. Don’t allow something and then tell your dog he can’t do it or scold him for something once and then allow it later.

Jack Russells have natural instincts that cannot be trained away. These include your dog’s need to chase things. If you have a Jack Russell, you should not have another small animal such as a gerbil or a cat. Even two Jack Russells should not be left together without supervision as one may kill the other over something as simple as a toy. Although you can train your dog, you can never completely get rid of your Jack Russell’s hunting instincts.

Your Jack Russell may also take off from the yard, following any interesting smells or other distractions. To prevent this, keep your dog on a leash when you take him for a walk. You should also check the perimeters of your yard to make sure that your dog is not attempting to escape over or under the fence. With the proper Jack Russel training, your dog can be a well-behaved companion that is extremely loyal to its owner. This obedience and loyalty will not be achieved without time and patience on the part of the owner.
