Puppy House
Training Information
You feel in
love with that cute puppy at the breeder’s, but that same
puppy doesn’t seem quite so cute the first time you have to
clean-up his mess on the carpet. Puppy house
training is normally the first step in establishing a
relationship with your puppy. Although house training is not
going to be easy and will require patience, it can be done.
There are quite a few things that you can do to ensure that
the process is effective.

One of the
first things that you will want is a crate. This is where
your puppy will stay when you are not taking him out to use
the bathroom or when you are not playing with him for short
periods of time. Because most dogs do not want to sleep the
same place they go to the bathroom, he will quickly learn to
hold his urges. Only place him in the crate for short
periods of time. Then take him outside and allow him to
relieve himself. If he does his business outside, praise him
and reward him for his positive behavior. This will
reinforce the idea that he should do this
outside.
Your puppy’s
crate can also be a good location to keep him when you are
sleeping or when no one is home. Puppies can become pretty
destructive if no one is around to watch them. A crate is a
place where your dog will not injure himself or destroy the
house while you are not around. However don’t leave him in
his crate for more than about six to eight hours at a
time.
If you are
willing to watch your puppy, you can take him out of the
crate and play with him for short periods of time in one
room. To avoid messes that you might find later in the day,
make sure that you or someone else is watching him at all
times when he is not either in his crate or outside. To make
cleaning up easier if he should have an accident while you
are playing with him outside of his crate, play with him
somewhere where there is tile or some other flooring that is
easier to clean than carpeting.

No
matter how careful you are about making sure your puppy goes
outside, there will probably be accidents in the house. If
you catch your puppy in the act of using the bathroom in the
house, tell him ‘NO,’ scoop him up, take him outside, and
have him finish his business outside. Praise your puppy if
he goes to the bathroom outside, and leave him there for a
few more minutes to finish his business. Despite what you
may have been told before, you should not rub the dog’s nose
in it, smack him with a newspaper, or yell at him. This will
only confuse and scare the dog. While your dog is outside, clean-up the
mess. Use strong cleaners which will completely eliminate
the mess. If your dog can still smell the scent, he will
return to this location to potty again in the future. I hope
that this puppy house training information will be of help
to you.
